Asus ZenWatch 2 to take on Samsung Gear S in 2015
The Asus ZenWatch 2 looks like going head-to-head with the Samsung Gear S, with CEO Jerry Shen confirming that a standalone smartwatch will arrive in Q3 2015, alongside two other new Asus wearables.
The Asus boss was speaking at the launch of the original ZenWatch in Taipei and, according to Focus Taiwan, the ZenWatch 2 will offer independent voice-calling and communication features much like the Gear S, which has its own SIM-card slot.
The report also states the Taiwanese tech company is working on two additional "wristband-like" devices that sound like budget fitness trackers, with the new duo purportedly being able to step count, measure bpm and record blood sugar levels.
It's unlikely that Asus will be ready to show off its new wearables in January at CES, even in prototype form - a MWC unveiling in March is much more likely.
The original ZenWatch is available now and is a lovely looking device with a unique and attractive design.
Its launch in the US was a bit of a mess with a series of misinformation being released by Asus, so we'd hope for a smoother outing for the sequel.
